Delicate baby critter, carefully sculpted from porcelain paper clay and fired to a high temperature resulting in a strong body with a subtle sheen due to clay vitrification. Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, it is full of detail, with a twirly tail and tiny toes.
An expressive and textural rodent sculpture, shown mid-pose, as if frozen in action. Fired to a high temperature, achieving a dark red colour of the stoneware clay. Eyes are deep black and highlighted with a gloss, whilst the buck teeth are coloured pearly white.
A statement rabbit sculpture hand built from black stoneware, body of which is fired to the highest temperature resulting in a deep black colour with slight white textured fleck. The clay is applied freely resulting in sharp strokes of layered fur, whilst the ears are pinched and twisted.
story.
Hi, I'm Sonia..
I create ceramic animals, hand-sculpted from various black and red stoneware clays. On the surface, these sculptures are simply feral rodents, suspended in a moment of action. Beneath the surface, these critters and their stories are responses to current issues surrounding animal rights.
I hope to compel the viewers to investigate the creatures, looking at details of the glossy black eyes or the pearly white teeth, discovering each animals own quirky personality and charm. Designed not only to raise an eyebrow or cause a smile, the sculptures intrigue and entertain.
My process of making begins with a study of each wonderful creature before sculpting my own adaptation. I sculpt a rough form, a three-dimensional sketch in a way, using the clay to preserve the spontaneity of my gestures, then carefully adding on small details such as toes and ears. This long process results in characters which exert a rich presence.
